Intermittent fasting has grown in popularity as a weight-loss strategy, but its long-term benefits remain unclear. While short-term studies show promise, researchers highlight gaps in evidence for sustained effects. With over 2.5 billion people worldwide classified as overweight, finding effective and lasting solutions is more urgent than ever.

Recent reviews, including a 2021 Cochrane analysis and a 2020 meta-study, examined intermittent fasting methods like 16:8 and 5:2. These studies focused on short- to medium-term results, typically spanning 4 weeks to 6 months. The findings indicated weight loss comparable to traditional calorie restriction, but no clear advantage over other diets.

The quality of existing research has been questioned due to mixed study designs and brief durations. Many trials combined randomised controlled studies with observational data, making firm conclusions difficult. A separate systematic review also found no significant difference in weight loss between intermittent fasting and other dietary approaches.

Beyond weight reduction, the method did not show notable improvements in quality of life compared to alternative strategies. Experts stress that the most effective diet is one that individuals can maintain over time. Medical guidance is recommended, particularly for those with underlying health conditions.

Despite its popularity, long-term data—studies lasting beyond two years—are almost non-existent. This lack of evidence leaves questions about safety and lasting efficacy unanswered.

For now, intermittent fasting appears no more effective than conventional diets for long-term weight management. The priority remains choosing a sustainable approach, ideally with professional support. With obesity rates continuing to rise, reliable and lasting solutions are critical for public health.
