Sarawak Premier strengthens tech and economic ties in UK visit

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has begun an official working visit to three UK cities. From May 2 to May 5, he will travel to Manchester, Bristol, and Dublin. The trip focuses on boosting technology ties and economic partnerships. The visit starts in Manchester, where Abang Johari will join the Sarawak Agenda-Townhall programme. He will also meet with the Manchester Regional Government and attend a dinner with local Sarawakians.

In Bristol, the Premier will visit the National Composites Centre. He will then take part in an engagement session between SMD Semiconductor and the University of Bristol. During the event, he will deliver a speech and witness the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding involving SMD Semiconductor. The final stop is Dublin, where Abang Johari will tour the K2 Data Centre. The visit aims to explore opportunities in data infrastructure, artificial intelligence, and semiconductor development. Talent training and industry collaboration are also key priorities.

The four-day trip covers meetings with government officials, academic institutions, and tech firms. Discussions will centre on expanding Sarawak’s digital economy and research partnerships. The outcomes could shape future investments in technology and education.
