Utah's Green River Energy Center Now Powers the Grid with Solar and Storage

The Green River Energy Center in Emery County, Utah, is now fully operational. The large-scale project combines solar power and battery storage to boost the state’s energy supply. It marks a significant step in Utah’s push to expand electricity production. The centre features 993,492 solar panels and 484 Tesla Megapacks. Together, they provide 400 MW of solar energy and a 400 MW/1,600 MWh battery storage system. This setup helps meet the region’s rising power needs.

Construction of the facility created hundreds of jobs, many filled by local contractors. Project partners also contributed to the community in other ways. They donated $45,000 to the Ferron Fire Department and pledged $375,000 in scholarships for local students. Over its lifetime, the project is expected to generate over $55 million in property tax revenue for schools and public services.

The Green River Energy Center aligns with Operation Gigawatt, a state initiative to double energy production within ten years. However, Utah’s broader plan still includes adding new capacity to existing fossil fuel plants rather than replacing them. The centre is now delivering clean energy to the grid. Its economic benefits include long-term funding for local services and educational support. The project strengthens Utah’s energy infrastructure while supporting community development.
