Space Force Awards Secret Contracts for Next-Gen Missile Defense in Orbit
The U.S. Space Force has awarded multiple contracts for Space-Based Interceptor (SBI) prototypes. These contracts are part of the Trump administration’s Golden Dome initiative, which allocates $25 billion over the next decade. The names of the winning contractors remain classified due to security concerns. The Space Force launched two separate contests for boost-phase interceptors. One focuses on endo-atmospheric intercept, while the other targets exoatmospheric intercept. Each contest carries a value of several hundred million dollars, though production contract decisions will not be made until after 2028.
Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Apex Spacecraft Manufacturer had previously pledged to bid on the effort. Each selected contractor received $120,000 in prize funds, with three one-year options for a ground demonstration. The majority of demonstration costs will be covered by the companies themselves. The SBI programme is a central part of the Golden Dome initiative. With $25 billion earmarked for the next ten years, it marks a significant investment in space-based defence. Contractor details remain undisclosed for now, but the programme is moving forward with ground-based testing.
