SwRI's HEAT Facility Upgrade Cuts Costs While Boosting Gas Turbine Testing

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has finished a three-year upgrade of its High Energy Annex Test (HEAT) facility. The improvements aim to lower costs while maintaining high standards for gas turbine combustor testing. The project was funded internally by SwRI as part of its commitment to advancing energy research. The HEAT facility specialises in testing gas turbine combustors under real-world conditions. Unlike many other sites, it provides continuous testing, ensuring more accurate and reliable results. A new high-capacity air compressor now triples the facility’s airflow and pressure capabilities.

The upgrade also allows HEAT to switch between different fuel types. This flexibility supports the global shift towards cleaner energy sources. Additionally, the use of additive manufacturing technology cut combustor component costs by 80%.

Griffin Beck from SwRI highlighted the need for physical testing. He noted that computational models alone have limitations in predicting real-world performance. The renovation aligns with SwRI’s broader investment in innovation, with over $13 million allocated to cutting-edge projects in 2025. The upgraded HEAT facility now offers enhanced testing capabilities at reduced costs. Its ability to adapt to different fuels and maintain high test quality positions it as a key asset for energy research. The improvements reflect SwRI’s ongoing efforts to support technological advancements in the sector.
