The findings highlight seasonal peaks and a rise in last-resort treatments like carbapenems. The research tracked antibiotic consumption patterns from 2018 to 2022. Seasonal spikes in usage matched periods of higher respiratory infections and hospital admissions. Over time, the reliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics grew, with carbapenem use increasing significantly.

The study also noted economic consequences. Rising resistance led to longer hospital stays and greater dependence on higher-generation antibiotics. These factors added financial strain to healthcare services.

To address the issue, the authors propose several measures. They call for investment in laboratory infrastructure to speed up and improve microbiological diagnostics. They also urge the creation of antimicrobial stewardship programmes in Sri Lankan tertiary hospitals. Additionally, the research advocates for community education on proper antibiotic use and continuous surveillance of consumption and resistance patterns. The study’s recommendations aim to curb antibiotic resistance. Improved diagnostics, stewardship programmes, and public education could reduce unnecessary use. The authors also stress the need for global surveillance to detect emerging threats early.
