Three arrested in Surigao del Sur's crackdown on illegal mining operations
A joint operation in Barobo, Surigao del Sur, led to the arrest of three individuals on Saturday, June 27, 2026. The crackdown targeted illegal mining in Barangay Bahi, a resource-rich area. Authorities seized equipment worth an estimated P5 million during the raid. The operation was conducted by local police, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Mines and Geosciences Bureau (DENR MGB), and the Mining Industry Anti-Illegal Mining Council (MIAC). The suspects, aged 33, 34, and 45, were residents of Tagbina, Surigao del Sur. They were detained for operating without the required permits under the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.
Confiscated items included water pumps and a backhoe, used in the illegal mining activities. The operation aligns with the National Government’s push to strengthen environmental protection, especially in rural areas prone to illegal logging and mining. After the raid, PNP Chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered regional directors and police commanders to improve coordination with the DENR for similar operations nationwide. The suspects now face charges for violating the Philippine Mining Act of 1995. PNP Chief Nartatez stressed the need for close cooperation between law enforcement, environmental agencies, and local communities. The operation underscores ongoing efforts to protect natural resources from illegal exploitation.
