Güssing Ponds Celebrate 10 Years of Wetland Conservation Success
The Ramsar Güssing Ponds Conservation Association will mark its 10th anniversary on July 12, 2023. The group works to protect a wetland area that serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds and hosts rare plants like the water chestnut. The Güssing ponds have long been a culturally shaped landscape with deep historical roots. Carp farming continues in the area to this day, while the site also provides a peaceful retreat for locals.
In 2016, the conservation association was founded to preserve the ecosystem’s delicate balance. The ponds were later designated a Ramsar site, earning international recognition for their ecological importance.
To enhance visitor access without harming wildlife, the association built footbridges, an observation tower, and a public hiking trail. These improvements allow people to explore the area while protecting sensitive habitats. The ponds support diverse bird species, including great crested grebes, water rails, and various herons. The Güssing ponds remain a significant wetland habitat and a valued local space. The association’s efforts have improved visitor management and ensured the protection of its rich biodiversity. The anniversary highlights a decade of dedicated conservation work.
