Microplastics Found in Nepal's Remote Tilicho Lake for the First Time

A new study has revealed microplastic pollution in Tilicho Lake, a high-altitude lake in Nepal. Researchers detected an average of 42 microplastic particles per litre of water. The findings highlight the growing concern over plastic contamination in remote environments. Environmental researcher Sahil Shrestha collected samples from Tilicho Lake and confirmed the presence of microplastics. The study, published in iScience, identified polyester, polyethylene, and polypropylene as the main types of pollution. Tourism was pinpointed as the most likely source of contamination in the area.

This discovery follows earlier research in 2019, when marine scientist Imogen Napper and her team found microplastics in snow and stream water near Everest Base Camp. Similar contamination has also been reported in Antarctica and Mount Everest, showing the widespread nature of the problem.

Water scientist Tista Prasai Joshi noted that plastic use is deeply embedded in daily life and is damaging ecosystems. To tackle this, experts are calling for international collaboration to reduce microplastic pollution from the trekking gear industry. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project has been urged to ban trekkers from carrying plastic bottles and bags. The study provides clear evidence of microplastic pollution in one of Nepal’s most remote lakes. Restrictions on plastic use and global cooperation may help limit further damage. Researchers continue to monitor the impact on fragile ecosystems.
