Allegheny County declares code red heat advisory for late June
Allegheny County has issued a code red heat advisory for June 29, 30, and July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Officials have activated cooling centres to help residents stay safe in the extreme heat. Five Pittsburgh cooling centres will operate from June 29 to July 2, open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. These include Beechview, Greenfield, Homewood, Sheraden, and South Side Healthy Active Living Community Centers.
Residents are urged to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors. They should also watch for signs of heat exhaustion. Vulnerable individuals, such as older adults and those experiencing homelessness, are a priority. The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will check on them during the advisory.
Unhoused adults can visit Second Avenue Commons for water and cooling supplies between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. each day. Older adults can call for assistance or visit senior centres for support. County pools and spray parks remain open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Western Pennsylvania residents can locate their nearest cooling centre online. The cooling centres and additional services aim to protect residents from the extreme heat. Residents are also encouraged to check on vulnerable neighbours, family, and friends. Officials continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
