Mysterious Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Fades Dramatically in Just Days
The interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS has dimmed significantly in recent days. First spotted on 1 July, the object is now only 63% as bright as it was six days ago. Its fading light has drawn attention from astronomers worldwide. Observations show the comet’s brightness has dropped by over a third. Its apparent magnitude rose from 10.1 to 10.6, a clear sign of diminishing visibility. At the same time, the distance between 3I/ATLAS and Earth shrank by 10 million kilometres.
The primary cause of the dimming is the comet moving farther from the Sun. Changes within its structure may also play a role. Despite the fade, it remains the fourth-brightest of nearly 100 comets currently visible from Earth.
The comet boasts a coma roughly 24 kilometres wide. Computer models suggest it is over 7.5 billion years old. Its next notable event will be a close pass by Jupiter on 16 March 2026. 3I/ATLAS continues to offer valuable insights into interstellar objects. Its decreasing brightness highlights the influence of solar distance and internal processes. Astronomers will keep tracking its journey through the solar system.
