Kostanay's 40km cycling network aims to slash emissions and traffic
Kostanay is planning a major cycling infrastructure project to boost sustainable transport. The city aims to create a 40-kilometre network connecting parks, squares, districts and residential areas. The scheme takes inspiration from Almetyevsk in Russia, known as the country’s cycling capital. The project is currently in the planning phase. Once finished, the bike lane network will grow more than five times its current size. It will feature modern technical solutions, clear road markings and best practices to ensure safety and efficiency.
Switching to bicycles brings clear benefits. Each kilometre cycled adds €0.08 in societal value, while each kilometre driven reduces it by €0.50. A single parking space can hold ten bikes instead of one car. Fewer car trips also mean less pollution on roads, in soil and in water, improving public health.
A 5% drop in car journeys would cut annual carbon dioxide emissions by 14,000 tons. This is equal to planting 600 hectares of forest, highlighting the environmental impact of the initiative. The new cycling network will link key areas across Kostanay. It promises cleaner air, better health and more efficient use of urban space. The expansion aligns with broader efforts to reduce traffic and promote eco-friendly travel.
