Classic ArmA: Cold War Assault gets a modern remaster with open-source engine

A remastered edition of ArmA: Cold War Assault is in development, bringing modern upgrades to the classic military simulator. The original Operation Flashpoint launched in June 2001 and was among the first open-world military games to feature combined-arms warfare across vast, explorable islands. The game allowed players to drive tanks, pilot helicopters, and lead squads of soldiers in large-scale battles. Its open-world design set a new standard for military simulations at the time. The title was later rebranded as ArmA: Cold War Assault under Bohemia Interactive.

Now, the remastered version includes a modernised engine, updated to C++20, with cross-platform support. Bohemia Interactive has also released the full engine source code on GitHub. A demo of the remastered edition is already available, serving as an official asset pack.

Looking ahead, ArmA 4 is scheduled for release in 2027. The remastered Cold War Assault introduces improved features and modernised technology. The open-source engine release provides new opportunities for developers and modders. The project marks a significant step in preserving and enhancing a landmark title in military simulation gaming.
