Smithsonian Strengthens Kazakhstan's Cultural Ties Through New 2025 Initiatives
The Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage has deepened its engagement with Kazakhstan in 2025. A series of initiatives aims to study, document, and promote the country’s rich cultural traditions. These efforts build on a long-standing partnership between the two nations. In May 2025, the center established the Kazakhstan Cultural Heritage Fund with backing from Chevron. The fund’s first project, the Kazakhstan Artisan Initiative, strengthened ties with the Union of Artisans of Kazakhstan. This collaboration supports local craftspeople and their traditions.
Earlier, in March, the center launched Heritage in Motion. This professional development programme, developed with Music Unbound and funded by Samruk Kazyna, focuses on cultural exchange and skill-building. The initiative reflects growing interest in Kazakhstan’s intangible heritage.
By October 2025, American artisans travelled to Kazakhstan to join the ALA CRAFT International Crafts Festival. The event highlighted traditional craftsmanship and fostered cross-cultural connections. Halle Butvin, a director at the Smithsonian with over ten years of experience, has played a key role in these efforts.
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reinforced the partnership during his US visit in September 2025. He committed additional support through Samruk Kazyna, Kazakhstan’s sovereign wealth fund. The Smithsonian’s long-term goal remains bringing Kazakhstan’s culture to its renowned Folklife Festival, provided funding is secured. The Smithsonian’s work in Kazakhstan focuses on preserving and sharing its living traditions. Music, storytelling, food, and craftsmanship continue to shape daily life in the country. These initiatives mark a significant step in cultural collaboration between the two nations.
