Mumbai's Powai Lake promenade set for a long-awaited eco-friendly makeover

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is pushing ahead with plans to redevelop Powai Lake promenade. The move comes after years of neglect and damage from metro and sewerage works. The iconic water body, spanning 223 hectares, is a key part of Mumbai’s urban landscape. The promenade, built in 2008, has seen little maintenance or improvement since its completion. Its worsening condition has sped up the redevelopment proposal. The BMC now plans to hire a consultant to create a detailed roadmap and designs for the area.

AECOM Asia Company Limited has been chosen for the task, with a proposed consultancy fee of Rs 1.85 crore. The firm was selected without a public tender, as the BMC cited its expertise in waterfront planning. The consultant will have four months to draft a blueprint, hold public consultations, and provide cost estimates.

The redevelopment is part of a larger vision to make Powai Lake a financially independent urban destination. The BMC also recognises the need to address environmental concerns while improving public infrastructure around the lake. The proposal includes a request to bypass the usual tender process. If approved, AECOM will begin work on the master plan within the set timeframe. The project aims to restore the promenade while ensuring ecological preservation.
