Navi Mumbai's Textile Recycling Facility Wins National Acclaim for Sustainability
Navi Mumbai’s Textile Recycling Facility (TRF) has been recognised as a groundbreaking model for sustainable waste management. Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde presented the project at a national summit, where he received an award from the Union Textiles Minister. The initiative has positioned Navi Mumbai as a leader in environmental consciousness. The TRF was developed under Dr Shinde’s leadership, with Deputy Commissioner Smita Kale overseeing its implementation. It features a dedicated textile collection system, improved segregation, and enhanced recovery capacity for post-consumer waste. These measures enable effective recycling and reuse of discarded textiles.
Over 50,000 households actively participate in the programme. Additionally, more than 300 women have been trained to create new products from textile waste, providing them with sustainable livelihoods.
During his presentation, Dr Shinde emphasised the importance of urban local bodies in the recycling value chain. He also called for stronger public-private partnerships to support the circular economy. The TRF’s success has strengthened Navi Mumbai’s reputation as an eco-friendly city. Its model could be adopted by other urban areas across the country. The project demonstrates how local action can drive broader environmental and economic benefits.
