North Rhine-Westphalia schools set new heatwave dismissal rules
Schools in North Rhine-Westphalia now have clearer rules for handling extreme heat. The Ministry of Education has issued guidance on when students may leave early due to high temperatures. These measures aim to protect pupils from health risks during hot weather. School leaders can permit early dismissal if classroom temperatures exceed 27°C. This applies to all students except those in upper secondary (grades 11-13), who must remain in class. For primary pupils and those in grades 5 and 6, parents must arrange safe supervision or transport before early dismissal is allowed.
Individual upper secondary students may still be excused if they face health risks from the heat. The Ministry also advises schools to avoid scheduling tests and exams on extremely hot days. Each school’s administration makes the final decision based on its own organisational framework. The new guidelines give schools flexibility to respond to high temperatures. Early dismissal depends on classroom conditions and safe arrangements for younger pupils. Schools are responsible for implementing these rules according to their own procedures.
