Bhopal Municipal Corporation To Develop 30 EV Charging Stations For 50 New E-Cars

Bhopal switches to all-electric fleet for government operations by 2025

Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon become the first urban local body in Madhya Pradesh to use only electric vehicles for official work. The initiative aligns with the state’s Electric Vehicle Policy-2025 and aims to remove fuel-powered vehicles from the city’s roads. The move follows directives from Urban Administration Department Commissioner Sanket Bhondve. Under the new plan, BMC will first build 30 EV charging stations and buy 50 electric vehicles for government use. The first batch of EVs will go to senior officials, including Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners.

Bhopal Smart City and Bhopal City Link Limited will also install around 70 charging stations at key administrative and commercial sites. Smart City will act as an EV aggregator for government departments, managing a centralised fleet of nearly 2,500 electric vehicles. Government departments will obtain these EVs through Smart City at pre-approved lease rates.

BMC’s transport department has already floated tenders for the procurement of EVs. The selected agency will manage the fleet under a three-year contract. The initiative will introduce eco-friendly vehicles into BMC’s operations. It marks a step towards eliminating petrol and diesel vehicles from Bhopal’s roads. The project begins with 30 charging stations and 50 EVs in its first phase.
