The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has unveiled its Climate Budget for the financial year 2026-27. It outlines significant investments in climate-aligned activities, with a focus on sustainability and infrastructure improvements across Mumbai. For FY 2026-27, the BMC has allocated an estimated Rs 20,730 crore for capital expenditure and Rs 4,632 crore for revenue expenditure under its Climate Budget. These funds will support various initiatives aimed at addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

The BEST Undertaking’s climate budget includes Rs 4,622.14 crore in operational expenditure and Rs 3,941.06 crore in subsidies. Key sectors have received substantial allocations, such as Rs 18,080.01 crore for Urban Flooding and Water Resource Management and Rs 1,369.36 crore for Urban Greening and Biodiversity. Other areas include Rs 968.15 crore for Sustainable Waste Management, Rs 156.67 crore for Energy and Buildings, Rs 90.85 crore for Air Quality Management, and Rs 65 crore for Integrated Mobility.

New initiatives under the climate plan feature the establishment of a dry waste management processing centre and a waste segregation centre. Additional measures include the installation of new LED streetlights, replacing conventional lighting with LED in municipal schools, procuring renewable energy, and wet leasing electric buses. The BMC also reported a 77.91% financial progress for its Climate Budget in FY 2025-26. The BMC’s Climate Budget for FY 2026-27 reflects a strong commitment to environmental sustainability. The allocated funds and new initiatives aim to tackle pressing issues like urban flooding, waste management, and air quality while promoting renewable energy and efficient infrastructure.
