Schmalkalden-Meiningen Offers Medical Scholarships to Fight Doctor Shortage
The Schmalkalden-Meiningen district has extended its medical scholarship programme for the 2026/27 winter semester. It offers financial support to medical students who plan to work in the region after graduating. The initiative aims to tackle the local shortage of healthcare professionals and secure long-term medical services for rural communities. The programme will award three scholarships, each providing €500 per month for up to five years. Applicants must be medical students from German or European universities, with priority given to those with existing ties to the district.
To qualify, recipients must commit to working in Schmalkalden-Meiningen for at least five years after completing their studies. Written applications should be submitted to the district office by July 31, 2026. The district hopes to attract young doctors early in their careers. The scholarships are designed to strengthen local healthcare and ensure its sustainability. Successful candidates will contribute to addressing the region’s skilled workforce gap.
