Norway Introduces Controlled AI Use in Schools for All Age Groups
Norway has announced new guidelines on the use of AI tools in schools. The proposals will allow pupils aged 14-16 to use large-language models under teacher supervision. Younger children will also see changes in the coming academic year. Starting in the new school year, most children aged 6-13 will follow the updated rules. Older students, aged 17 to 19, will learn to use AI responsibly as part of their preparation for work. The focus remains on core subjects like reading, writing, and mathematics.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre has highlighted concerns about AI use. He warned that relying on such tools too early could cause young children to miss key learning stages. The new guidelines aim to balance AI integration with traditional education. Upper secondary students will develop skills for future jobs. Younger pupils will have limited and supervised access to these tools.
