Houston to Launch Uber's Robotaxi Service with Nuro and Lucid in 2027

Uber, Nuro, and Lucid have selected Houston as the second city for their upcoming robotaxi service. The launch is planned for mid-2027, with the service operating exclusively through the Uber app. The partnership aims to expand autonomous vehicle use across multiple markets. Nuro has been active in Houston since 2019, previously running Level 4 autonomous vehicle tests in the city. Its self-driving technology will power the new service, which will use Lucid Gravity electric SUVs. The city’s size and complex road network make it an ideal testing ground for the system.

Nuro is already testing vehicles on Houston’s public roads, with safety operators onboard. Lucid will soon start assembling production-validation robotaxis at its Arizona factory. Meanwhile, Uber has prepared a 50,000-square-foot depot and charging facility in Houston to support the fleet.

The robotaxi engineering fleet currently includes nearly 100 vehicles operating in California and Texas. The broader partnership between Uber, Nuro, and Lucid targets a global rollout of at least 35,000 autonomous vehicles across dozens of markets. The Houston service will mark a key step in the expansion of the robotaxi network. It follows ongoing testing and infrastructure preparations by all three companies. The programme is set to begin operations in mid-2027.
