Belarus to Host Two Dazzling Meteor Showers This December

Belarus will host two major meteor showers this December. The Geminids, known as the brightest and most active, will light up the sky first. Later in the month, the Ursids will offer another chance to spot shooting stars under the country’s long winter nights. The Geminid meteor shower will reach its peak on the night of December 13–14. Under clear skies, viewers may see up to 150 meteors per hour. This display is known for its brightness and reliability.

On December 21–22, the Ursid meteor shower will take place. It produces fewer meteors, around ten per hour, but remains a notable event. The shower’s radiant point lies near the constellation Ursa Minor, making it easier to locate in the night sky.

The Ursids occur when Earth passes through the debris left by comet 8P/Tuttle. This comet last visited the inner solar system in 2021 and will return again in 2035. For the best experience, observers should look up late at night or just before dawn. Both showers provide excellent opportunities for stargazing in Belarus. The Geminids promise a spectacular display, while the Ursids offer a quieter but still impressive performance. Clear skies and dark conditions will enhance visibility for both events.
