Gangotri National Park Closes After Record Visitor Surge and Revenue Growth

Gangotri National Park and Gartang Valley have closed for the winter season. The shutdown follows a busy period that saw a rise in visitor numbers and revenue. Closure ceremonies were held at major entry points to mark the end of the season. The park recorded 29,162 tourists this season, even after disruptions from the Dharali disaster. Entry fees alone brought in Rs 80,96,750, a sharp increase from Rs 61 lakh in 2023. The Gartang Valley, known for its thrilling landscapes and historic stepped pathway built by 17th-century Pathans, also drew many visitors.

To protect its wildlife, over 50 camera traps have been set up across the park’s 1,553 sq km area. These will monitor rare species during the closure. The park remains a global hub for mountaineering and trekking. Officials confirmed it will reopen on April 1, 2026. The closure ceremonies took place at Kankhu Barrier, Bhairavghati Barrier, and Lanka Bridge Barrier. The park’s revenue and visitor numbers reflect its growing popularity. Preparations are now underway for its reopening next spring.
