Microsoft now says 8GB RAM is enough for everyday Windows laptops
Microsoft has updated its guidance on RAM requirements for Windows laptops. The company now states that 8GB of RAM is sufficient for everyday tasks and normal usage. This change follows recent developments in the laptop market, including Apple’s release of the MacBook Neo. In early February 2026, Microsoft initially recommended 32GB of RAM for serious gamers in a blog post. This suggestion was later removed. Previously, the company had positioned 16GB as the minimum for an optimal Windows 11 experience.
Microsoft’s update comes after Apple impressed reviewers with its $599 MacBook Neo, which features 8GB of RAM. In response, Microsoft released its own 8GB RAM laptop, priced at $1,299—roughly double the cost of Apple’s model. The company claims 8GB delivers a smooth and responsive user experience.
For users needing extra headroom, Microsoft continues to endorse 16GB or more of RAM. This higher capacity supports multitasking, demanding applications, and advanced AI features like Copilot+. The new guidance reflects a shift in Microsoft’s stance on RAM requirements. Its 8GB laptop enters a competitive market, while 16GB remains recommended for heavier workloads. The update aligns Windows laptops with varying user needs and budget considerations.
