Navi Mumbai cracks down on banned plastic with massive enforcement drive
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) carried out a major anti-plastic enforcement drive on June 12. The campaign targeted banned plastic items across several areas under its jurisdiction. Officials seized a total of 158 kg of prohibited plastic materials during the operation. The drive was conducted under the supervision of NMMC Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde. It covered multiple zones, with varying amounts of plastic confiscated and fines imposed on offenders.
Turbhe saw the largest haul, with 100 kg of banned plastic seized and Rs 45,000 collected in fines. Ghansoli followed, where authorities confiscated 28 kg of plastic and imposed penalties totalling Rs 30,000. Belapur officials recovered 10 kg of plastic and fined violators Rs 30,000.
Airoli officials seized 8 kg of banned plastic and collected Rs 15,000 in fines. Koparkhairane resulted in 2 kg of plastic confiscated and Rs 20,000 in penalties. In Vashi, authorities seized 5 kg of plastic and issued Rs 5,000 in fines, while Nerul saw 5 kg of plastic taken and Rs 10,000 in fines.
Overall, the NMMC collected Rs 1.55 lakh in fines from 30 commercial establishments involved in the violations. The drive removed 158 kg of banned plastic from circulation across Navi Mumbai. It also generated significant revenue through fines, reinforcing the corporation’s commitment to enforcing plastic bans. The operation highlighted ongoing efforts to curb illegal plastic use in the region.
