Kazakhmet Balakhmetov's enduring legacy in Kazakhstan's education and charity

Kazakhmet Balakhmetov, born on 26 June 1926 in Sulukol, dedicated his life to education and charity. He served as Kazakhstan’s Minister of Education from 1974 to 1987, leaving a lasting impact on the republic’s schools and young people. Balakhmetov was born in the village of Sulukol, North Kazakhstan Region. He later became a deputy in multiple sessions of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR. As Minister of Education, he expanded secondary and boarding schools across Kazakhstan.

Under his leadership, the republic became one of the Soviet Union’s top performers in education. By 1984, Kazakhstan’s schools educated 2,953,000 children, with 2,457 teaching in Kazakh and 1,092 offering bilingual classes. He also helped establish the Shokan Ualikhanov Museum in Syrymbet.

After retiring in 1987, he chaired Kazakhstan’s Children’s Fund for ten years. In this role, he supported large families and orphans through extensive charitable work. His commitment to nurturing young people continued throughout his career. Balakhmetov remained active in public life long after leaving office. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 95, surrounded by his family. His contributions to education and welfare shaped generations in Kazakhstan.
