NIA-Romatom MoU to Expand Nuclear Partnership

UK and Romania unite to accelerate nuclear energy collaboration

The Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) and Romatom have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to deepen their partnership. The agreement was formally signed at the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris on 4 November 2023. Tom Greatrex, Chief Executive of the NIA, and Corina Truica, President of the Board of Directors at Romatom, put their signatures to the document. The MoU aims to speed up nuclear deployment by pinpointing key areas for collaboration between the Romanian and UK nuclear sectors.

The agreement sets out plans for practical cooperation in several fields. These include new large-scale nuclear projects, Small Modular Reactor development, fusion research, decommissioning, waste management, and medical radioisotope production. It also seeks to link supply chains, drive innovation, and build education and skills to benefit both nations.

The partnership will push for the inclusion of nuclear technologies in UK-Romania talks and in wider international forums. It will also strengthen ties between the associations and encourage teamwork among industry players, utilities, and educational institutions. The MoU is expected to create opportunities in the UK, Romania, and global markets. It marks a step towards a cleaner and more secure energy future for both countries. The leaders of both organisations have highlighted their shared commitment to nuclear energy as a clean and reliable power source.
