Shakarim University fuels Abai Region's growth through science and innovation

Shakarim University is becoming a central force in Abai Region’s growth by linking science, education, and the economy. The institution is expanding its role as Kazakhstan pushes forward with new policies to strengthen higher education and research. Recent years have seen major investments in scientific activity and infrastructure at the university. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has prioritised advancements in science, technology, and higher education. These efforts have allowed universities like Shakarim to take a more active part in regional development. New laws, including the On Science and Technological Policy, have also provided a stronger legal framework for the sector in Abai Region.

The university has boosted its scientific work, with funding rising by 1.4 times in 2025. Nearly 500 million tenge has been set aside to upgrade laboratory facilities. Regional science and technology councils have been formed to support these changes. Universities now have greater independence in decision-making and must answer for their results, with guidance from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Shakarim University’s Engineering Center is driving progress in industry, mechanical engineering, and energy. It specialises in surface engineering and the repair of industrial equipment. The university is also developing two digital platforms, AgroHub.shakarim.kz and AgroW-space.com, to connect government bodies, agribusiness, and research in one system.

A new Kazakhstan-China Joint Laboratory for Electrification and Automation is being set up with Xi’an Jiaotong University. This partnership will train experts and create solutions for industry, energy, and high-tech manufacturing. Shakarim Lab is also working with local districts to tackle practical issues, from digitising rural areas to improving agricultural efficiency and advancing engineering technologies. Abai Region remains a key area for Kazakhstan, addressing national priorities in radioecology, environmental safety, and nuclear technologies. Shakarim University’s growing contributions in science and technology are helping to shape the region’s future. The university’s expanded capabilities and new initiatives are set to strengthen its impact on local and national development.
