Harford County closes two trails amid worsening avian flu outbreak

Constellation Energy has closed two popular trails in Harford County due to an ongoing avian flu outbreak. The Wildflower trailhead and the Mason-Dixon trail near Fisherman’s Park will remain shut indefinitely. The move follows a previous closure in March 2025 after the flu was detected in black vultures. The outbreak has raised concerns among visitors about its impact on local wildlife. Millions of birds died from avian flu in 2024, and the problem has persisted into 2025. As of April, the USDA confirmed 220 wild bird deaths nationwide, with 10 cases in Maryland alone.

Invasive species in the area may also be worsening the spread of the disease. To reduce risks, authorities advise people to avoid contact with sick or dead birds. Anyone who finds one should report it to the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Walkers are also urged to clean their shoes after visiting affected areas to prevent further contamination. The trail closures aim to keep the public away from infected birds and slow the flu’s spread. Officials have not set a reopening date, as the situation remains under review. The previous shutdown in March shows the outbreak has been difficult to control.
