Almaty Region launches massive cleanup to restore tourist spots and nature
A large-scale environmental campaign has begun in Almaty Region as part of the May holidays. Called 'Cleanup Days', the initiative aims to tidy up tourist spots and natural landmarks across the area. The effort is part of the wider national 'Clean Kazakhstan' program. Over 20,000 people took part in the first day of the campaign, including volunteers, business representatives, and members of 130 regional organisations. Together, they cleared more than 120 hectares of land, focusing on popular tourist routes and recreational zones.
In just one day, participants collected and removed 340 tons of household waste. The campaign targets key areas to improve their maintenance and ensure a better experience for visitors. Marat Sultangaziyev, the region’s akim (governor), highlighted the importance of keeping the area clean to leave a positive impression on tourists. He also stressed the need to build a culture of respect for nature among both locals and visitors. The 'Cleanup Days' will continue over the coming weekends, expanding to more natural and recreational sites across Almaty Region.
The campaign has already made a visible impact, with significant waste removal and widespread participation. Organisers hope the ongoing efforts will lead to cleaner tourist spots and greater environmental awareness in the region.
