Asia-Pacific Publishing Boom Hits $420 Billion in 2024
The Asia-Pacific region now leads the world in publishing growth, with revenues hitting between $400 billion and $420 billion in 2024. China and India are driving this expansion, while Japan’s manga industry continues to attract global attention. The surge reflects rising reading rates and a booming market for both print and digital content. China’s reading culture has seen a dramatic rise over the past two decades. In 2004, just over half the population read regularly, but by 2024, that figure climbed to 82.1%. Authors like Liu Cixin, whose Three-Body Problem trilogy gained international acclaim, and Nobel laureate Mo Yan have fuelled this growth. Print books still dominate, making up around 60% of the region’s publishing sales.
India’s literary scene is also flourishing, particularly in English-language publishing. As the world’s second-largest market for English books, it has produced globally recognised works like Geetanjali Shree’s *Tomb of Sand* and Arundhati Roy’s novels. These titles highlight India’s growing influence in world literature. Meanwhile, Japan’s manga industry remains a cultural and economic powerhouse. Popular series such as *Demon Slayer* have turned locations like Fukuoka’s Homangu Kamado Shrine into tourist hotspots. In 2024 alone, manga-related product sales reached ¥54.3 billion (around $372 million), reinforcing its role as a key sector in the publishing market.
The Asia-Pacific publishing market shows no signs of slowing down. With China’s reading rates at record highs, India’s literary exports gaining traction, and Japan’s manga industry thriving, the region’s dominance is set to continue. Print remains strong, but digital growth is also reshaping how audiences engage with books.
