Russia and China Launch New Cross-Border Gas Pipeline by 2027

Russia and China are moving forward with a new cross-border gas pipeline. The project, set to begin operations in late January 2027, will transport up to 10 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. Preparations are now underway to ensure the timely launch of deliveries along the Far Eastern route.

The pipeline’s cross-border section will stretch beneath the Ussuri River, connecting Dalnerechensk in Russia with Hulin in China. A bilateral intergovernmental agreement governs the construction of the necessary infrastructure for the project. In 2024, Russia’s state expert review agency, Glavgosexpertiza, approved the plans for the Far Eastern route after a thorough assessment.

Installation of key equipment has already started at the Dalnerechensk gas metering station. This facility will play a crucial role in regulating and measuring gas supplies to China. Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller confirmed that preparations remain on schedule for the pipeline’s launch. Once operational, the pipeline will secure gas deliveries to China for at least 25 years. The agreement ensures long-term energy cooperation between the two countries.

The new pipeline will significantly boost Russia’s gas exports to China. With operations set to begin in early 2027, the project marks a major step in cross-border energy infrastructure. Annual deliveries of up to 10 billion cubic metres will strengthen energy ties between the nations for decades.
