Omsk shatters 83-year rainfall record in historic April downpour

Omsk has broken an 83-year-old weather record after heavy rainfall on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The city recorded 19 millimetres of precipitation in a single day, surpassing the previous high set in 1943. Meteorologists from the Ob-Irtysh Hydrometeorological Service confirmed the milestone. The old record of 18.4 millimetres had stood since April 26, 1943. This year’s downpour exceeded that mark by 0.6 millimetres, marking the wettest day in Omsk’s recorded history.

April 2026 proved unusually wet across the region. Most districts in Omsk Oblast received between 80% and 193% of their typical April rainfall. The heaviest showers arrived in the final ten days of the month.

Looking ahead, Russia’s Hydrometeorological Center has predicted above-average rainfall for Omsk Oblast in May. The forecast suggests the wet conditions may continue into the next month. The new record highlights a shift in local weather patterns, with April 2026 seeing significantly higher precipitation than usual. Residents and officials will now monitor whether May follows the same trend of increased rainfall.
