Science and art collide in Heidelberg's groundbreaking light dialogue

A rare conversation between science and art will unfold in Heidelberg on December 17, 2025. The event brings together nanoscientist Jana Zaumseil and conceptual artist Mischa Kuball to explore the role of light in their work. Their discussion will also examine how light shapes wider society and culture. The 90-minute dialogue forms part of the Talking Heads series, a collaboration between Heidelberg University’s Institute of Physical Chemistry and the association of the same name. Zaumseil, a professor of Applied Physical Chemistry, specialises in the optical and electronic properties of carbon-based nanomaterials. Kuball, a professor of Public Art at the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln, uses light to probe architectural spaces and political narratives.

The event takes place at the Marsilius Kolleg in Heidelberg, starting at 7:00 PM. Moderator Joscha Steffens will guide the conversation, which will be recorded for a video podcast. Attendance is open to the public, but registration is mandatory. Kuball is also a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts, adding further depth to the interdisciplinary exchange.

The discussion offers a chance to see how two distinct fields—nanotechnology and conceptual art—intersect through the medium of light. Those interested must secure their spot in advance. The recorded version will later be available as a podcast.
