OpenAI's Codex Pets brings animated AI companions to coding workspaces
OpenAI has introduced Codex Pets, a new animated AI companion for its coding tool. The feature allows users to add a floating pet to their workspace, providing real-time updates on project status. Eight default designs are available, including a cat and a dog. The companion appears as a small, interactive overlay that keeps users informed without interrupting their workflow. It can be enabled through Settings > Appearance > Pets or toggled quickly with keyboard shortcuts.
Users can also design their own pets using Codex prompts. The community has already shared custom creations, from tech CEOs like Sam Altman and Dario Amodei to fictional characters—even a goblin.
Beyond aesthetics, Codex Pets helps monitor active threads and project progress. The floating display ensures key updates remain visible while coding continues. The feature blends utility with personalisation, letting developers track tasks without switching screens. With built-in options and custom designs, Codex Pets adds a dynamic element to OpenAI’s coding environment. The tool is now available to all users.
