Arms Companies Plan to Launch Satellite Network in Space by 2029 - Europe's bold new 100-satellite defence network to launch by 2029
A new European defence initiative will see between 75 and 100 satellites launched into orbit by 2029. The project, led by German defence firm Helsing and Norwegian technology company Kongsberg, aims to reduce Europe’s reliance on U.S. space capabilities. The satellites will focus on military reconnaissance, surveillance, and tracking targets from above. The joint venture brings together several key players in European defence. German sensor specialist Hensoldt will provide radar, radio, and optical equipment for the satellites. Once operational, the network will support European militaries with independent intelligence-gathering.
Isar Aerospace, a German launch provider, will send the satellites into space from its Norwegian spaceport. The companies plan to invest tens of millions of euros upfront, with further funding expected from public sources. Germany’s Ministry of Defence has already earmarked €35 billion for space and security projects by 2030. A new production facility in Germany will assemble the satellites. The initiative aligns with Berlin’s goal of becoming a credible deterrent and defensive power in space within the next six years.
The first satellites are set to launch before the end of the decade. Once complete, the network will give European forces greater autonomy in space-based intelligence. The project marks a significant step toward reducing dependence on non-European space infrastructure.
