Woman saved at birth returns as a doctor to the same hospital

A woman who survived a dramatic birth has now returned to the same hospital as a qualified doctor. Kailie McGee graduated from Texas Christian University’s Burnett School of Medicine this week. She will soon begin treating patients at Baylor University Medical Center—the place where her own life was saved.

McGee’s story began 26 years ago when her mother suffered hemorrhagic shock during childbirth. The newborn was rushed to the NICU after being born with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around her neck. Her breathing stopped, and her heart ceased beating.

Doctors at Baylor University Medical Center worked quickly to revive her. Now, decades later, she returns not as a patient but as Dr. Kailie McGee. Her first role will be in internal medicine, starting on July 1. McGee’s journey from a life-threatening birth to a medical career has come full circle. She will practice at the very hospital that saved her as a newborn. Her first day as an internal medicine doctor begins next month.
