Lusatia as the future home of the Einstein Telescope? The Green Party sees a once-in-a-century opportunity for research and jobs—and is calling on the government to throw its full weight behind the bid.
The Greens are pressing the Saxon state government to advocate at the federal level for Lusatia as the site of the Einstein Telescope. In a motion before the state parliament, the party demands that the region be given the same consideration and attention as all other candidate locations.
Competition from Sardinia and the Netherlands
Alongside Lusatia—where the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA), headquartered in Görlitz, is currently under development—Sardinia and the Netherlands are also vying to host the Einstein Telescope. The project is a European initiative to build an underground observatory in the shape of an equilateral triangle.
The telescope will enable scientists to detect and analyze gravitational waves from space, marking a pivotal advance in exploring the universe. Researchers aim to use it to observe collisions of black holes and uncover new insights into the origins of the cosmos.
Schubert: A Once-in-a-Century Opportunity for Lusatia
Franziska Schubert, co-leader of the Green Party's parliamentary group, called the project a "once-in-a-century opportunity for cutting-edge research in Lusatia." In a statement, she emphasized that the Einstein Telescope would "create high-skilled jobs, attract top international scientists, and make the region an even more compelling destination."
Schubert urged Saxon Minister-President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) to champion the cause with full commitment. The Greens are seeking cross-party unity in the state parliament to advance the bid.
