Iloilo City and UPV unite to restore Calle Real's historic landmarks

The Iloilo City Government and the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) have joined forces to preserve and revitalise Calle Real’s historic buildings. A formal agreement was signed on May 4, 2026, marking the start of a major heritage conservation project. The initiative will focus on redevelopment, repainting, and community engagement to bring new life to the area. Under the partnership, three key buildings along Calle Real will undergo restoration, with work set to begin later this year. The project, titled Heritage as Public Policy: Preserving and Promoting Iloilo Calle Real Buildings, will involve consultations with building owners, heritage advocates, and local institutions. Field research and public forums will also shape the preservation strategy.

UPV Chancellor Clement Camposano stressed the need to embed heritage conservation within broader governance and stakeholder collaboration. He highlighted plans to diversify Iloilo’s tourism appeal, including halal culinary offerings and a proposal to transform the Iloilo River into an ecotourism 'living classroom'. Mayor Raisa Treñas welcomed the agreement as a crucial step in reviving the city’s core. The project aligns with ongoing efforts to boost foot traffic and attract new businesses to the area.

The redevelopment of Calle Real’s buildings will start in 2026, guided by input from the community and heritage experts. The initiative aims to strengthen public policy around conservation while expanding tourism and economic opportunities. The city government and UPV will continue working together to ensure the project’s long-term success.
