Saxony-Anhalt's Bold Push to Stub Out Smoking for Good

AOK Saxony-Anhalt has launched a new campaign to help residents quit smoking. Called Fresh Start in May – Smoke-Free into Spring, the initiative provides support throughout the month. Those looking to take part can find resources at www.deine-gesundheitswelt.de/rauchfrei. Smoking remains a widespread habit in Saxony-Anhalt, where 22.5 percent of people smoke—higher than the national average of 18.9 percent. The health risks are severe, ranging from chronic coughing and lung diseases to long-term conditions like heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer. COPD, a progressive lung disorder, is another common consequence.

The campaign offers a mix of courses, expert advice, and personalised motivation to help smokers quit. However, AOK warns against turning to vaping as an alternative. E-cigarettes and vapes can contain carcinogens and harmful residues, with their long-term effects still poorly understood. They also carry a high risk of addiction, making them an unreliable solution for breaking nicotine dependence.

The Fresh Start in May initiative runs until the end of the month. Participants can access tools and guidance online to begin their smoke-free journey. The programme aims to reduce smoking rates in the region by providing structured support and evidence-based strategies.
