Mental health crisis shuts down I-580 in Livermore, snarling weekend traffic

A mental health crisis on an overpass led to a full closure of Interstate 580 in Livermore on Friday. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the situation, causing major delays for drivers heading into the weekend. The incident began around 2 p.m. when officers engaged with a person on the overpass. Initially, only the eastbound lanes of I-580 were shut at the junction with Highway 84/Isabel Avenue. Soon after, westbound lanes were also closed, halting traffic in both directions.

By 4 p.m., congestion stretched back past Dublin and Pleasanton, reaching as far as Rowell Ranch. Authorities urged motorists to take alternate routes, including SR-84 or I-680 to Highway 4, to avoid the gridlock. The situation was peacefully resolved, and all lanes reopened by 3:52 p.m.

The closure disrupted travel plans for many during the busy Friday afternoon. With lanes fully reopened, traffic gradually returned to normal, though residual delays lingered into the evening.
