Global Initiative Plants One Million Trees Across 20 Countries in 2025
A global tree-planting initiative called Roots for Change has now planted one million trees across 20 countries. The project was launched on World Earth Day 2025, with volunteers taking part in cities like Mumbai, Thane, and multiple locations in Gujarat. The effort aims to get families and communities involved in nurturing young trees for long-term sustainability. The initiative was first announced at the 2025 Global Encounters Festival in Dubai. Led by the Ismaili community, it encourages people of all ages to adopt eco-friendly practices by planting and caring for trees. The Ismaili community, numbering between 12 to 15 million worldwide, is guided by Prince Rahim Aga Khan, who became its 50th spiritual leader on February 4, 2025.
As head of the Aga Khan Development Network, Prince Rahim promotes environmental, social, and cultural projects. Volunteers from over 20 nations have joined the campaign, planting trees in urban and rural areas. The goal is to foster a sense of responsibility towards nature, ensuring that local communities take an active role in sustainability. In India, planting efforts have taken place in Mumbai, Thane, and several cities in Gujarat. The initiative’s organisers hope that by involving families in tree care, the impact will last for generations.
With one million trees already planted, Roots for Change continues to expand its reach. The project’s focus on community involvement and long-term environmental care sets it apart. Future phases will likely see more regions joining the effort to boost green spaces and sustainability.
