Heroic rescue saves three starving largha seal pups in Magadan

A full-scale rescue operation for three young largha seals unfolded in Magadan earlier this month. Yulia Melnikova, a senior engineer with the Federal Penitentiary Service, led the effort after spotting an emaciated pup on May 2. Her quick actions and coordination with experts gave the animals a chance at survival. The first distress call came on May 2, when Melnikova discovered a severely underweight harbour seal pup. She immediately reached out to the Tulen Marine Mammal Rehabilitation Center in Primorye for advice. By the following day, a second pup in critical condition was rescued and brought to her home.

A third pup arrived from Marchekan on May 3, bringing the total to three seals under her care. The unusually warm winter had left the young animals struggling to find food, worsening their condition. Recognising the urgency, Melnikova worked with specialists who dispatched an experienced marine mammal expert to Magadan. This trainer guided local volunteers in proper care techniques. Thanks to the combined efforts, the three largha seals now have a real chance of recovery. Melnikova later expressed her gratitude for the support received, stressing that every life saved mattered.

The rescue mission highlights how quick action and expert collaboration can make a difference. The three pups, once near death, are now receiving the care they need. Their recovery will depend on continued support from volunteers and rehabilitation specialists.
