A Week of Learning in the Forest Instead of the Classroom: Rheinfelden Children Embrace Outdoor Education

Instead of spending their days in the usual group room, children in Rheinfelden experienced a special kind of learning—deep in the woods. As part of a "Forest Week," youngsters from the Sonnenschein kindergarten spent several days exploring the great outdoors. Equipped with weatherproof clothing, they ventured into nature each day, gathering new experiences through play.

The program wasn't just about movement and discovery—it also included hands-on activities. The children carved wood, sawed branches, and practiced using tools. According to the city of Rheinfelden, these activities helped develop fine motor skills while boosting the children's confidence.

A highlight was building shelters together. Using branches and leaves, the little ones created their own cozy hideaways. Creative workshops, like molding faces out of clay, were also part of the schedule.

Beyond the activities, the week emphasized mindful engagement with nature. The children observed wildlife, listened to the sounds of the forest, and enjoyed breaks on self-made "forest sofas."

The Forest Week is part of the kindergarten's educational approach, demonstrating how learning outside traditional classrooms can play a vital role in child development, the city explained.
