DHL's AI tool automates customs descriptions for faster global shipping

DHL Express has introduced an AI-powered image recognition tool to simplify the shipping process for customers. The new system allows users to photograph their items and receive an automated, customs-compliant description. This marks the first large-scale deployment of such technology in global express shipping.

The feature works by analysing photos of shipment items using computer vision. It then generates structured descriptions that meet international customs standards. Customers no longer need to manually declare package contents, reducing errors and saving time.

No registration is required to use the tool—only a smartphone or camera-equipped device. The service is currently available in eight markets: Germany, Canada, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, South Africa, Spain, and the United Arab Emirates. DHL Express plans to expand the feature globally in phases throughout 2026. Dirk Olufs, the company’s Global Chief Information Officer, highlighted that accurate shipment data from the start improves efficiency. It reduces follow-up queries and speeds up customs clearance. Enna Zarate, Senior Vice President of Digital Customer Solutions, emphasised that precise descriptions are key to a smooth customer experience. The tool aims to replace the traditionally manual and error-prone process of declaring package contents.

The AI-powered system is now live in select markets, with further rollouts planned for 2026. By automating customs descriptions, DHL Express expects fewer delays and faster processing for international shipments. The move reflects the company’s push to modernise logistics with digital solutions.
