Astafyev Port's giant canopy nears finish to slash coal dust pollution
Astafyev Port is nearing completion of a massive canopy over its coal unloading area. The structure, designed to improve environmental safety, will fully enclose coal handling operations. Once finished, it will mark a major shift toward cleaner port operations in the region.
The canopy stretches 206 meters in length and rises over 33 meters high, covering more than 10,000 square meters. Its framework consists of tens of thousands of steel-aluminium parts, built to endure the harsh climate of Primorsky Krai. Twelve reinforced concrete foundations, each 12 meters tall, provide the necessary support for the vast structure.
An international team, including the Spanish firm Gaptec and local companies T-Stroy and Alpar Plus, collaborated on the project. To further reduce dust emissions, a protective curtain now surrounds the unloading zone. The port already operates 12 advanced dust suppression systems, ensuring eco-friendly coal handling. In addition to the canopy, the facility uses a specialised vacuum machine that removes dust and debris. This equipment can also be deployed to clean nearby city streets when required. The entire project remains on track for completion in the third quarter of 2026.
Once operational, the canopy will allow Astafyev Port to switch entirely to enclosed coal transshipment. This change will significantly cut dust emissions and improve working conditions. The port’s investment in modern infrastructure sets a new standard for environmental protection in the industry.
