How Malaysia's youth can steer AI toward ethical and economic growth by 2030
The 5th International Conference on Youth 2026 (ICYouth) has highlighted the role of AI in shaping social wellbeing through ethical and inclusive development. With Malaysia’s digital economy already contributing over RM450 billion to GDP in 2022, the focus now turns to how young people can influence AI’s future impact. AI’s economic influence in Malaysia is set to grow significantly. By 2030, it could add between RM13 billion and RM20 billion annually to the country’s GDP. Experts also predict a yearly GDP growth boost of 0.8 to 1.2 percentage points, driven by AI advancements.
The long-term effects of AI will depend on how it is designed and implemented, particularly by younger generations. The values embedded in AI systems—shaped by the models, training data, and frameworks created today—will determine its societal impact. To support responsible innovation, the Government Innovation Initiative (GII) will soon launch. This programme will tackle public sector challenges using emerging technologies, including AI. GII ensures that new ideas are tested, refined, and scaled within structured guidelines, promoting accountability and ethical development.
The conference underscored the importance of youth involvement in AI’s ethical progression. With Malaysia’s digital economy expanding, the responsible use of AI could further strengthen economic growth. The GII’s launch will provide a structured approach to integrating AI solutions into public sector needs.
