How the StG 44 Rifle Revolutionized Modern Infantry Warfare

The StG 44 rifle marked a turning point in infantry weaponry during the Second World War. Its development began in 1938 under a German military contract, leading to one of the first successful assault rifles. Designers at C.G. Haenel, led by Hugo Schmeisser, played a crucial role in shaping its final form and later variants.

In May 1938, the German Army commissioned Haenel to create a 7.92 mm selective-fire weapon. The result, the schwere Maschinenpistole 42 (Mkb 42(H)), competed against Walther's Mkb 42(W). Military tests at Döberitz favoured Haenel's model for its durability, simpler disassembly, longer sight range, and resistance to fouling.

The weapon underwent multiple name changes as production scaled up. Initially called *Maschinenkarabiner*, it became *Maschinenpistole* (MP 43, then MP 44) before finally adopting *Sturmgewehr 44* in late 1944. By mid-1944, factories were churning out over 50,000 units monthly. An October 1944 directive also ordered the StG 44 to replace the standard Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle. As the war strained resources, Haenel developed a stripped-down prototype, the StG 45(H). This version included a hinged receiver for easier maintenance, a simplified gas piston, and a smooth gas tube to support rifle grenades. The name *Sturmgewehr* itself reportedly came from either Adolf Hitler or General Erich Jaschke of the Army High Command.

The StG 44 became a defining weapon of its era, blending automatic fire with manageable recoil. Its influence extended beyond the war, shaping future assault rifle designs worldwide. The simplified StG 45(H) prototype, later tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground, further demonstrated the ongoing push for efficiency in late-war German engineering.
