2025 Space Race Heats Up as China and India Push New Frontiers
The global space industry saw major developments in 2025, with countries expanding their capabilities and commercial ventures growing rapidly. India marked a significant achievement by launching its heaviest satellite yet, while China strengthened its position in both government-led and private space initiatives.
In early 2025, India's LVM3 rocket successfully carried the GSAT-7R communications satellite into orbit. Weighing more than any previous Indian satellite, it highlighted the country's advancing launch technology.
Worldwide, 323 space launches took place during the year. The United States led with 198 missions, followed by China with 89. Russia conducted 15 launches, primarily for ISS resupply and military purposes, while Europe managed eight. India completed five launches, Japan four, and Israel and South Korea each achieved one successful mission. Iran attempted a single launch, which ended in failure. China's space sector expanded dramatically in 2025. The commercial market surpassed $350 billion, with over 600 companies involved in various segments. By early 2026, more than 96,000 businesses were registered in the industry, including nearly 50 specialising in rocket development. Geespace, a Chinese firm, demonstrated its capacity by producing up to 500 satellites annually, enabling fast deployment of large constellations. The country also showcased its emergency response capabilities by safely returning astronauts within 20 days after a debris incident. In November 2025, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) established a new commercial spaceflight department to better integrate private enterprises into national space efforts. Meanwhile, the Euclid Consortium released its first major dataset in 2025. The collection included images and information on 26 million galaxies, offering valuable insights for astronomers and researchers.
The year 2025 reinforced the growing role of commercial spaceflight, particularly in China, where policy support and industrial growth accelerated development. India's successful heavy satellite launch also underscored its progress in space technology. With more countries and private firms expanding their activities, the sector continues to evolve at a rapid pace.
